Special warrants are issued when a department or agency spends more than what was allocated in the provincial budget.
 
The PEI government stated when special warrants were approved by executive council in 2022 that they are….”not something government takes lightly.” [See: “P.E.I. approves $37.7M in special warrants for transportation and infrastructure department, August 22, 2022].
 
Really? Then explain the attached?
 
Auditor General Darren Noonan wasn’t happy with the special warrants issued last year, the amount being twice the previous year. From the article attached:
 
A special warrant — as the name suggests — is only to be used in unexpected, unforeseen circumstances.
 
For the fiscal year ending in March 2022, Noonan’s office found the government spent $163 million on special warrants — twice as much as during the previous fiscal year.
 
“‘It’s a trend that is going in the wrong direction, I think,” said Noonan. ‘The Treasury Board policy says that special warrants are to be used as a last resort … sometimes it’s just to cover cost overruns within departments, which comes down to managing your financial resources.'”
 
That overrun last year was 163 million…..we’ve already surpassed that amount by my calculations, and we’re not at year-end yet…will there be more?

It appears the legacy media no longer report this spend-thrifting-rampaging-news any more, from what I can see: multiple searches found nothing with either CBC or the Guardian, but I may have missed it.
 
You’d think they’d be interested in reporting this kind of news, but they’re very sick lately and I think possibly even dying, so I guess I can’t really fault them, especially given the fact that if they disappeared from the planet yesterday, it would still not be soon enough for me.
 
I wanted those following my posts to know the mess Dennis King continues to make of things, as he now seems able to do little more than dig deeper and deeper, as we slide into a hole that won’t be easy to get out of on our own.
 
King won’t be here to help.
 
He’ll be gone before too much long you can bet on that…you know what they say, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going, and cowards and crooks get out of town.”
